Week 1

My brother is a very effective communicator in daily life. He is always very at ease in any situation and with any person. He is able to talk to anyone he meets. His profession is a salesman so this ability helps him. I would like to model some of my own communication behaviors after him because I am a naturally shy person and I do not always feel comfortable talking to new people. It is sometimes hard when meeting new families building that relationship because I struggle to communicate and connect. I wish I had more of his confidence and ability to strike up conversations with everyone.

  1. Hi Jennie,
Your brother seems to be a very confident and effective communicator in his daily activities. My youngest son is exactly the same way as your brother. For me if I know you I am very comfortable and pretty confident in my communication. I seem to struggle when I am out in a crowd of people that I do not know. It is extremely difficult for me go up to someone and start a conversation. I have no problem with the parents in my business even when I first meet the. It is all a mystery. lol

  2. Hey Jennie, good to have you in my class again!
It is great to watch people in action who have the skill of communication when we are not comfortable with it. I can remember being extremely shy in school, and being amazed at others who were talking because I could never even think of something to say. If a thought came to my head that I thought was worthy of saying out loud, someone would beat me to it, and I would stay quiet.
Over the years, I have overcome this by having a stock question to ask the people I am meeting. For example, "How's parenting going so far?" or ask questions about their child such as, "Does Sally look more like mom or dad?" By asking people about themselves and smiling, they do all the talking!

  3. Hello Jennie, I can relate all too well, I wished that I had excellent communication skills. People with good communication skills can deliver information very clearly and directly in a way that others can understand unmistakably. It seems that your brother have the skills to read an audience in order to provide the correct transmitting and receiving communications openly.

  4. Hi Jennie
I hope if I practice long enough that I can development that skill just to strike up a conversation like your brother. If I know you then I feel pretty comfortable, but I struggle when I am meeting people for the first time. Some people are just naturals, but I hope we learn some tips in this course that will give us more confidence.
